Extraschicht - an event to get to know the Ruhr Area

Last Saturday, I spent the evening and night together with my mum, uncle and aunt at an event called Extraschicht (~Additional shift). You pay for a ticket and can spend the rest of the day traveling the whole Ruhr area for free using public transport and visit several interesting buildings and events all over the cities in the Ruhr area. This was my first time participating, but it will most certainly not be my last!

Since my family visited the Extraschicht every year, we decided to focus on Bochum as the main city since they didn't visit it yet. At first we started at the Ruhr Uni Bochum (Bochum's university), where we visited the arts section and listened to "Shakespeare at the table" where students gave short monologues at your table. Very cool!

Later we enjoyed cocktails while listening to Tolstoi, got some free books and tried local foods from Iran, China and Vietnam...

Our next stop was the Jahrhunderthalle (~ century hall), where we checked out the Westpark and saw the show Urbanatix. The inspiration for the show was "creative machine" and there were Beatboxers, Parcourists, bikers, dancers and other artists giving their best for 1 hour!

Our final stop was the Amphitheatre in Gelsenkirchen with an impressive laser show plus dancers plus an operette singer.

After this show (which ended around 1.30 am) we decided to call it a day and head home. It was a great night and I'm looking forward to seeing all the stuff they organize for next year!
