I changed my plan for the spider outfit as soon as I got my fabric swatches for the green spiderweb fabric. It was way to shiny and neongreen, obviously designed for cheap halloween costumes. And talking to my boyfriend (he wants a matching outfit sewn by me for at least one of the days), I quickly decided to change the colourway to red and black. I also realised that I need at least one dance-able outfit, so I might redraw the sketch again, but until then, I already got started on the hat!
The focal point of the hat/fascinator will be a red glittery spider. Since it is hard to come by large enough spiders for my idea - not even speaking of glittery ones- I had to prepare one mself. I took a black plastic spider I got for halloween and motchpotched glitter on it. To be more concrete:
I covered the spider in motchpotch (a clear glue which also serves as varnish/topcoat)
and sprinkled it with red glitter.
Then, after the glue was dry, I added another layer of motchpotch and more glitter.
After drying, I covered the spider with glue again. Now the glitter sticks nicely to the spider and doesn't come of.
Next step is to prepare the hat and add the spider to it- stay tuned!
