Dark shopping in Essen - additional information to Leostore

Since I wrote about the Leostore here in Essen the last time (which was in november, time runs fast!), the opened some additional rooms in the cellar. These rooms include a headshop - really neccessary for all goths out there *eyeroll*- and a cyber area.

The cyber area covers two more rooms with additional dressing rooms, a cyberesque decoration with tubes and balck lights. They sell cyberdog, amok,  sektor 1 and other clubwear there for normal prices (neither cheap nor extremely expensive). While the guys there were really helpful and did their best to fit me into some cyberdog shirts, the shirt I ordered was not even been ordered by them until now.

I fell in love with the cyber blossom shirt and needed a size they had not available. The told me they will order it and call me when it arrives. That was some 4 weeks ago and last time I asked - which was last wednesday- they had not sent the order to cyberdog! They also said the "are not sure when they will re-order, as they collect a certain amount of pre-orders before". I think I will be faster ordering said shirt myself from cyberdog.co.uk...

So while I would like to add another point for decoration and space, I have to reduce a point for friendly but rather useless staff. Same points as before!

Captain, my captain

I still work on the WGT stuff, but focused on the steampunk outfit. Do you also have the problem that you start hating projects when you work on them for too long? I think I'm just a bit tired of the green fabric, but I was very short tempered when sewing the bustle yesterday. So I started with the bolero/jacket for captian octopus:

Please don't mind the sports bra! Front closure has hooks and eyes...

I had to brighten this pic, otherwise you couldn't see the puffy sleeve details

Lining in grey with pinstripes and I still have to do the collar properly

Best part of the jacket/bolero: The handpainted octopus on the back!
Unfortunately the hem stretched quite a bit - I wanted to coordinate with the pants which have to be done in elastic fabric, so I went for stretchy jeans in black. Hemming widened the lower part for about 10cm total. I'm still indecisive wheter to open up all seems properly or just sewing unprofessional darts... *sigh*

Wow, that was strange. Telling something about yourself 30 times in a row. I really liked it, and some fun memories even I almost forgot about popped up (for example the old picture of myself. I must have been either unphotogenic or shy during adolescence, there are hardly any pictures of me!). My boyfriend got me the film "dark city" and promised to watch it with me. Nobody commented on nothing, so I don't know if it was as interesting for you as it was for me?! Oh well, let's get some sewing done. Only 4 more weeks until WGT!

I'm not much of a planner, usually I just take what I get and turn it into something nice! But some things I would like to achieve in the future would be:

Carreer
  • write 2-3 paper and get them published
  • present your work as a poster/talk at an international meeting
  • do the functional analysis you planned since last year
  • apply for a post doctoral grant to stay two more years here in Essen
  • find out whether somebody would offer you a Postdoc in Berlin
Sporty
  • improve your flexibility, maybe by attedning a yoga course
  • increase your running frequency
  • try to find a belly dancing course fitting your work schedule
Private
  • be happy
  • stay with boyfriend
  • meet more friends
  • sew at least one gamrent per month
  • be creative
  • learn japanese again
All of these goals are "would be nice" rather than "have to". But a girl can dream, no? ;)

Submarine captain (Does this look like a body part to you?)

I was not lazy during the last days, I just had a lot of handsewing to do where you don't get to see nice results very fast. Does this picture remind you of something?! ^^

I tell you it's utterly harmless! It's picture of the handsewn lining for my overseas cap for WGT outfit number 2... See?

The application of Mr Oktopus was hairy since the cap is a little to small for him, but my boyfriend turned him until he looked decent. This is how it looks worn:

This year so far I have made some great changes to my activities, I do sports at least twice per week. Most of the time I do more. I fonud out that I will probably never be a teamplayer, but I enjoy any dancing activity enough to keep me going!
I really got into sewing again - I don't know why I ever stopped, but somehow I lost my mojo. Now it seems to be back again, maybe I should try to set high goals which seem to motivate me a lot!
I still love to live with my boyfriend although sometimes we don't agree on things or some of his habits drive me wild. It was a huge step for me to move in with him, but I'm really happy with the outcome!
Carreerwise I found a professor to supervise my PHD and strated writing on some papers. As my first project was surprisingly successful, I did some further steps in this direction. I even presented this work in poster and some talks to a scientific audience!
So far, this year was a good one and I'm looking forward to more months of 2011!

This month was rather crazy with an important talk I had to give, a seminar I lead for medical PHDs, a colleague on holidays leaving a bunch of work behind and the beginning of a new and exciting project at work.
I got in touch again to some friends by either calling them or visiting then or -even better- meeting them accidently at some random party and then party all night long with them!I must admit that sometimes I am not the best friend of them all; It's not that I'm not loyal or talk behind their backs, but since I'm not fond of calling people, I sometimes don't contact them for months. Bad me, I try to improve!

The boyfriend did some modeling on RPC, so I spent some time there meeting NuS people - somehow it seems that there is always at least one person from the forum whereever I go. It was a blast meeting Niniel Chan and her boyfriend there, although I doubt I would recognize him without his dark elven costume!

As the moth is not over yet, I'm looking forward to finishing one (or maybe two, if this is a productive week) WGT outfits and a Natron und Soda picknick next saturday. And next month is not only WGT, but some surrounding days of will make me really happy!

My week so far was rather short - it's only monday, you know? ;)

Last (work) week was pretty hectic; my colleague and I had to write a protocol from the meeting the week before. I had to prepare a poster for my boss. I recently started a new project with a colleague from Marburg, so we did some preliminary test and are now about to start the real thing. The medical PHD students also had some problems last week which I had to solve, that kept me pretty occupied.
At home this week was more relaxing. After I had some eyesight problems on monday morning, I skipt monday's pilates class and did some handsewing *blargh* on the tornure jacket. Tuesday was spent with the boyfriend on the couch, watching Simpsons and doing nothing. Wednesday was my Zumba class, which was as much fun as always. Thursday I started with ironing the hems of the tornure skirt, but was too lazy to finish sewing them. On friday I was called by an old friend and talked for some hours. No work was done! On saturday we cleaned the flat and I baked some muffins which I brought with me visiting *wollmaus*. I had a wonderfull afternoon/evening on her balcony with her and her friends. We even discussed some sewing and redesigned her corset! On sunday I finished sewing the tornure skirt and added the lace. I also cut (and started sewing) a hat for the steampunk outfit for WGT!

Today I was woken up by a annoying fly which somehow escaped all our fly nets in front of our windows. As it was only 7 am, I turned around and slept some more. I woke up just in time to watch "Sendung mit der Maus" (a german TV show that I try to watch every sunday and was mostly successfull since I was 3 years old), but the episode was one I already knew. I took a shower and spent some time in the internet while drying.
After my BF and I made some mexican wraps -which did not wrap but broke to pieces- for lunch, I headed for the sewing machine and worked on my WGT stuff. Here is the result:

please don't mind my dressform in underwear, she needed some filling in the bust department to be closer to my measurements

Again, the boyfriend obviously doesn't notice that the peplum is messed up. Aargh!

Still not with the wired underskirt, although Neisi gave me tips on how to save it, I need flat steel instead of the spiral steel I used

bloomers

Besides the tornure, I realised that I might also get started on the other WGT outfits. For the steampunky outfit (although I found out that due to my colorway it might be more dieselpunk than steampunk) I was inspired by fräulein mieze and wanted to recreate her striping technique. For this I needed:

Scissors, tape (waterproof), a bowl with water, fabric paint (I used Anthrazit), a paintbrush and an ironing board to fixate the colours for washing. Then I

Cut the fabric and layed in falt on an area covered with trashbags (seeping colour stains the wooden floor, I found out the hard way... *blush*). I just made up some bloomers pattern, but you can find a lot of patterns on the internet...

Next step was to tape the stripes. In the beginning I actually measured the width, but years of sewing helped me with guesstimating after the initial 5 minutes...

Don't mind the foot, I always work in Tailor seat...

Then I added a blob of colour to the lower end of the stripe. I always did 3-4 stripes at the same time. After spreading the colour a little with the application brush (small to get inside the paint pot), I started to brush the colour to the top with a wide, wet brush:

And repeat, repeat, repeat until satisfied with the result! After drying for 12 hours, I ironed the fabric according to the instructions on the paint and viola

The last step was to sew the bloomers, apply elastics and here is the finished result:

When it comes to weather, I'm rather strange. While most people enjoy summer most, I prefer autumn or winter. I like it cold, temperatures above 25°C make me feel like I'm melting. If it is that warm during the night, I rarely sleep.

Maybe I'm cold adapted, but all my ancestors stem from the region I'm living in. Maybe I'm part Inuit, but not that I know. Sunny vacations with the boyfriend are nightmares in two ways: 1) I will be bored to death by lying in the sun and not moving
2) His favourite temperature range is settled a good 5-7°C higher than mine. When I feel great, He is cold, When he feels good, I'm grumpy, sweaty and lack sleep.

What is your favourite season? Do you like temperatures in the 30°Cs?

Burda Style 5/2011

Well, I might be late but I wanted to get this review done before next month's issue comes out! Here we go:

The pretties! Surprise, surprise: more dresses and a jacket. It may be because of my huge pants fitting issues with Burda, but I mostly feel drawn to their dresses. And a jacket or coat can brighten up your daily wear so much, it is unbelievable! Third place goes to a jersey dress. I think the ruching flatters many figures and the shrug helps people with floppy arms, so I might sew something inspired by this! Second place goes to this cute little jacket. I already saw that this was the favourite of most people in my favourite internet sewing platform, but I have to admit I'm not a fan of the hook-and-eye closure. These tend to open up or get entangled with delicate fabrics...
So the best pattern from the april issue is the little shift dress. I like the colar and can see this for work as well as play (in a nice jewel coloured satin, for example)!

In the dark side of this Burda issue I see frumpy dresses, a jeans shirt and a skirt that puts more than emphasize on the hips. Am I the only one who feels disturbed by a dress with a top inlay? Which probably hangs below your normal bustline like almost every Burda dress does? Not very flattering!
BTW, the nineties called and want their jeans shirts back! I didn't like them the first time around and still think that they might a good fashion for cowboys and truckers. But not for the targeted audience of Burda!
And what about this skirt? looks loosely inspired by Marie Antoinette but not in a good way. Yeas, I like pockets in my skirts, but these are so over the top!

Ok, who is surprised when I mention my most favourite sewing page of the whole internet here?

natronundsoda.net

If you haven't visited the page, go there already! I think I joined the forum in 2005, which means I have been visiting the same page almost daily for 6 years. I'm impressed!^^

It offers free sewing patterns which you can draw yourself to your own measurements. While it was strictly gothic-focused in the beginning, the layout was recently changed to a more bright and friendly version. During the almost 10 years that the project of the two founders Natron and Soda is existing, their personality and taste in clothes changed.

I love the forum as it answers all your (sewing related) questions and then some. You can got there with emotional and makeup questions, find help for a handstitched hem or bright hair colour maintenance.

It was my virtual home for 6 years and I think I will stick there until the bitter end. May it never come!

As I told you before, I visited Turkey nad greec a lot in my younger years. While I like most of the food served there, up until today I love tabbouleh/kisir/however-you-want-to-call-it, most. I like it so much that I searched for years for a form of couscous/bulgur my boyfriend likes, because he hated the grainy texture. There is no better food on hot summer days!

Kisir
  • 1 cup bulgur
  • 3 tomatoes, seeded and chopped
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and chopped
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • 3 or more (I like 5, but I'm a garlic fiend) cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 2/3 cup olive oil

Directions

  1. Place cracked wheat in bowl and cover with 2 cups boiling water. Soak for 30 minutes; drain and squeeze out excess water.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the wheat, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, garlic, parsley, salt, lemon juice, and olive oil. Toss and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. Toss again prior to serving.
  3. For Kisir add a tablespoon of tomato puree.

Post musselin sewing

On friday I had a big and important meeting were I had to present some of my current data, so I put up a lot of scheduled posts for this and last week. But I was not lazy and really worked on my WGT stuff!

I made some progress with the tornure: Neisella told me how to improve the fit of the wired underskirt and it seems to work. Unfortunately the boyfriend is needed to cut the spiral steel, maybe he will do so tonight. I'm also still hemming the basic skirt, so I show you what is almost done...

The buttons are not fastened, that's why the appear to be shifted! Still need to do the buttonholes!

Something about the details:

As I said in this post, I had some measuring tape band that I wanted to integrate into the jacket. I was not quite sure about adding lace, but in the end fell in love with some lace on ebay and bought it! For the jacket I cut the lower layer of said lace because the bulk added by band and lace like this was already enough. The bands look as if I used some cord underneath, very 3D! In the detail shot from the "apron" you can see the lace in full glory:

I will show you the almost finished tornure later this week, maybe even the fully finished version. I still have some hemming and draping to do, but I need the wirde underskirt finished for that!

My hobby has to do with needles and notions. More than once it cost me blood. It is highly addictive and never as cheap as I thought in the beginning. It takes up a lot of time and space, but is never futile.

I'm not a telented person. I mean, I can cook and bake reasonably well, but I still use recipies and find myself uninspired most of the time. *Wollmaus* cooks a lot more interesting stuff than I do!
I like sewing, but then again I don't feel very creative compared to others. While I might pop out wearable stuff, I admire creativity and inspiration of so many designers.
I think my talent is to make dancing seem liek fun and effortless. I love to dance. I love to move my body to the music, to feel every single note in my body. A good base will make it hard for me to stay seeted. And when I dance, other people seem to notice my love for music and dancing. I even earned some money with performances (usually belly dancing). While my technique was never clean, personality and charme entertained the people. At least that's what my teacher always said! ;)

I love learning about other cultures. When I visit a country, I try to find out how the locals live. As a child I loved to read children's stories from russia, turkey, greece and nordic countries. I find great pleasure in visiting ruins of old temples and pyramids, buildings and gardens. It might be geeky, but those old cultures fascinate me almost as much as new ones. When I was a young child and still traveling with my mum, she always took us to special places. Before I was 12, I visited the acropolis, troya, myconos, several roman forts and many German castles.

Even today I can hardly travel without visiting as much old cultural buildings as possible. I find it relaxing and entertaining, very much unlike my boyfriend who is bored to death by this "stuff". Now you know the dirty secret why I prefer to travel to interesting places with my (girl-) friends instead of him. Sorry darling!

I'm not much of an art person. I like pretty thing to look at, but I don't have to go into too much depth. I like museums, but more the interactive ones. I like paintings to be realistic, figurative and clear. That is why I prefer older paitings to newer ones, usually. In Monet's work, you can clearly see him loosing focus and eyesight. Van Gogh's paintings are nice, but I prefer brushstrokes to pointilism. When I first saw this picture in my german textbook (odd source, hu?), I instantly fell in love with Orphelia from John Everett Millais. I could have put anything from Dali here or Louis Rojo or Giger, but still to this day the art noveau flair of orphelia leaves me breathless...

There are several songs that can make me sad, but the worst song is "Yesterday" by Frank Sinatra.

I heard it the first time when my dad told me and my brother about his breakup with mum. Wasn't that bad (actually, we both kind of knew it before and were more angry because he kept his dog secret than the actual breakup), but the lyrics are ever-so-true. Whenever I regret a decision, whenever I don't know where to turn, whenever I feel suffocated by relationships, I yearn for yesterday as much as Mr. Sinatra.

Do you read fanfics? I don't. The only fanfic I ever started to read was something about Harry Potter, Hermoine and Lucas Malfoy ("The Draco Trilogy" - link leads to download- by Clarissa Clare ) and I put it aside after the first 50 or so pages. I liked the "Mortal instruments"-Trilogy by the same author and read on the internet that she used some of the subplots before. But it just wasn't interesting enough to keep me reading it. Sorry! ^^

I have asecret liking for non-fictional books. I read a lot of english biology literature which is centered around evolution or behaviour. I love reading books from Richard Dawkins, who is strongly against creationism and wrote a lot of books about how evolution is possible and how humans developed. If you have any interest in this topics, I can really recommend him and his humorous writing!

But the book I'd like to talk about is "The ape and the sushi master" by Frans de Waal. He writes about culture in animals. It's not about dressing apes (or dogs or cats for that matter) in human clothes or teaching them how to use a toilet, but rather about techniques they learned and teached later generations. Salting of potatoes, pricking open milk bottles - it's amazing waht animals learn and how the evoultion of human culture can be seen in animal tribes.

Frans de Waal also wrote books about ethics in animals which are an interesting read. Did you know that apes can lie or trick their conspecifics for fruit and mating partners?

My favourite fictional book is "Lord of the rings". While I have to admit that I skipped most of the endless war parts ("Bla, son of Blabla, from the country of blablubb, was slain by Blubb, son of Blubbblubb, from the country of whereever." in endless repitition. Tolkien, this was even longer and more boring to read that the landscape description in epic detail! Sorry! ^^), I love that this book is different than your normal fantasy book. What I like best are:

Tom Bombadil - A very old, wise and powerfull creature that has the power to help in the conflict... - but just doesn't care. Who could destroy the ring, but is more interested in strolling through his woods. He knows he will not be affected by the war for a long time and prefers to just stay in his little world. He gives good advice and is by far my favourite of the bunch!
The Ent bureaucracy - While the Ents are very powerfull and strong, it takes a while to get them into gear. A long while, if you remeber that a sentence in Ent-ish can take some hours. In real life you don't always get what you want and it usually takes some time. The Ents tought me some patience!

The ending - I love how not every conflict is solved when the evil overlord is killed. When the hobbits come home to the Shire, there are still orks lurking around. They have to fight them and claim back their homes. The elves are still gone and will probably not return even if the evil left their country. It's more like real life than fiction in this part.

So, if you haven't read the book yet, I can really recommend trying it. But please don't wait for the plot happening in the movie series from Peter Jackson, he mostly took the names and the battles and changed everything else...

Today my fancy is tickled by stuff to buy. Since it was the time of the cherry blossom in the past weeks, I fell in love with those beautiful and fragile flowers again. Every year they bloom so fast and vigorously and soon all fall from the trees and die. Only to come again next year:

And my love for digital things led me to fall in love with this shirt:

digital cherry blossoms!

It will be my very first Cyberdog cloth, a brand which I have always deemed to small for me (somehow for cyber clothes designers, the size range ends at M. Which I'm not.). But it fits in L and was ordered for me last week!

Another thing I will buy soon are new running shoes. Mine have seen the best of days, so I need new ones. Why is it so hard for women to find shoes in black without too much pink or purple? I want dark shoes as I run outside and my white ones are more like grey no matter how much I clean them. Why is there no all-black shoe with over-pronation protection? So I will do what every good christian would - I will buy the smallest size men's shoe! Black-grey-green, outdoorsy and fitting...

Edit: Actually, I found something better. Look at these pretties - pink inside, black outside. Just like me! ^^

I don't know if this is cheating, but here you go: Me in the bustle skirt musselin!

Let's start with the underskirt:

As you can see it did not quite work out as I planned. I had something more like this in mind:

Any ideas, what I can change to make things better? More steel? different hoop placement? Well, but I like the view of the Burda pattern, so even if you guys can't help me rescue my steel underskirt, the rest looks like this:

So, I might just use the stuffed pillow on my butt! The jacket also needs some work, especially in the bust departement and more width in the belly (unless I wear a corsett):

I will make the sholuders smaller, lower the starting point of the waist, move the width of the fron to my chest and from my arms. The back feels okay (wrinkles from flash and unattentive boyfriend who didn't tell me that the fabrics bunched up).

What do you think?

Progress

This is how far I have come with the musselin (it's so great to sew without any hems and clean insides!):

A little closer it looks like this (ignore the non-irony-ness!):

While the jacket doesn't look half bad on the fake me, on myself the fit is not as good. The shoulders are to wide, it stretches over my belly (in the lower area, but I will wear a corset) and the bust gives strange wrinkles. When I come home tomorrow, the BF will be forced to take pics so you can help me with my fitting issues. There is also a bumby tournure underskirt waiting for help... 5 1/2 weeks to go! *panic*
