2017 in Review

On a scale of 1 to 10: How was your year?
Like last year, I'd say approximately an 8. Still in love with my boyfriend and happy to live with him once more. Got cute kitties. The job is still great. But I could have achieved more...

Lost or gained weight?
Same as last year: I stayed the same although I intended to lose some

Hair longer or shorter?
Longer, I've not had it cut since ages!

More nearsighted or farsighted?
Again the same as last year: Not more nearsighted (seems like the value usually stayes fixed between 25 and 45) but my corneal irregularities have grown a bit. Also, of note: I tend to buy glasses at the end of the year.

More money or less?
More money. I love my job!

Spent more or less?
More. I spent a bunch on the kittens of doom but they are worth every cent! Next year I will have to save some moolah for a big vacation!

Most stupid plan?
No stupid plans this year. Maybe heading alone to a concert could count as stupid, but it was not!

Most dangerous deed?
Preparing a presentation in the early morning hours before it was held to an international audience. And my boss...

Most expensive buy?
The kittens. And their belongings...

Most delicious food?
We tried out lot of new things as usual and most of our cooking is the bomb! I'd say that this year, our pulled pork from the slow cooker wins the award.

Most impressive book?
I'm full into the Harry Dresden series which is just great!

Most touching movie?
Thor - Ragnarok! The best comic adadtation ever! Finally a movie where Thor is not stuck up your butt and the whole movie is like a really funny drug trip. Loved it!

Best series?
Last year it was Jessica Jones, this year the spin off "Luke Cage". Watching this series which mainly has black characters opened my eyes again how white washed main stream media are. Plus, the story line is cool!

Best CD?
Do they still sell these? Korn - The Serenity of Suffering. Came out in 2016, but this year I got hooked!

Best concert?
Aurelio Voltaire in Frankfurt. Went there on a whim alone and had so much fun!

Most time spend with...?
More thinking and watching than active stuff. I want to change that next year though!

Best time spend with...?
My boyfriend. As last year. And the year before. And the year before that...

Predominant feeling in 2017?
Happiness. I have amazing friends and family!

Done for the first time in 2017?
Went to a concert completely alone. Twice!
Adopted kitties
Bought a table
Visited Belgrade

Done again in 2017 after a long time?
Killed all the plans of my flat. Boooyah!
Had a cat on my lap
Was on a conference in another country

Three things I could have missed?
Being down with the flu. Cat hair everywhere. My boyfriend not keeping his stuff at one place and blaming me for losing everyting he can't find.

Most important thing I wanted to convince somebody off?
Keep me in this job, I'm good at it!

Best present I gave away tis year?
Sewing for my friends and family.

Best present someone gave to me?
The catscoming closer and loving us so dearly

Best sentence someone said to me?
I love you

Best sentence I said to someone?
I love you.

Better job or worse?
Still the same as last year. Still love it!

Did you win something this year? If yes, what did you win?
Nope nothing. I don't play

More fitness or less?
Less. But I went to the gym again and my sour muscles tell me it will be better again!

How often were you sick?
I think it was only twice thei year. Need to better keep track of it!

Which was the worst sickness?
One in March were I stayed home for one week due to the flu.

Word of the year?
Nothing comes to my mind.

Non-word of the year?
I bims 1 gin (not a word but new German slang and horribly annoying)

Blog of the year?
Not mine, The loss of all my linked pictures really killed the mood for blogging. I'll try to get back on the bandwaggon again and restart the blog in 2018!

Biggest wish for next year?
Being a better me

2017 in one word...?

Pics or it didn't happen

So, you.might have noticed that all my selfmade pictures suddenly vanished from my blog. The reason for this is easy: I used Photobucket to host my pictures. After years of being a free provider, they suddenly want 400 Dollars plus a monthly subscription to display my pictures to third parties like blogger. And since I don't deal woth blackmailers, I'm currently looking for a new host service. Can anyone recommend one? It might take some time to upload everything again and add the pics back, so please be patient with me!

Sorry!

Week in Review 28/2017

What did I see?
I have not yet watched the movie "Nightbreed Chronicles" by Clive Barker, but the description and the character design look intriguing! Mutated people who have special abilities trying to escape a psychopathis serial killer? By the maker of Hellraiser? Count me in! I just ordered the movie for a nice horror night!

What did I listen to?
Nothing specific, just general radio

What did I ask myself?
If I spend all my weekends having fun, who will sew my fancy dresses?

What did I read?
Finnished the "Finishing School" series by Gail Carriger and love it! Go and read it already if you like Steampunk and Victorian Manners! I also read "Ink" by Alice Broadway, a book in a parallel world where people get tattooed all important happenings in their life. Being a "blank" (i.e. untattoed) is considered sketchy and bad. A really interesting take on modern supervision and a strange dystopian world. I liked it although the ending is a bit... short. Thanks to Sabrina for the recommendation!

What did I work on?
Again nothing. But I will have to, the next festival is coming (Amphi)!

I was happy about...
Rain. And cooler weather.

I was annoyed about...
Cat hair in inaprorpriate places. These d*mn buggers get everywhere!

I bought...
A nail polish and make up brushes.

Deer and Doe Safran jeans

In my tour de force to overcome my fear of pants (and to close some holes in my wardrobe which I am not allowed to fill by buying more), I tackled another pants pattern. The Safran pants pattern by Deer and Doe was another pattern I got on sale last November. While I have plenty of black pants, I wanted to have some skinny black jeans as well. A good opportunity to use the black stretchy jeans I bought in Amsterdam!

After my experiences with the Clover pattern by Colette, I decided to just go for the original fabric and not make a mockup. Every pants fabric is different and all of them require different adaptations, so I just left a wide seam allowance (I added a cm to the included 1.5cm) and cut into the fabric. As my fabric was cheap with 2 Euros per meter, I knew it wouldn’t hurt too much if it didn’t work out. The only thing I was afraid of was that the fabric may not be sufficiently stretchy – they were asking for 30% stretch!

Since this was not my first pair of pants (nor my first pair of jeans), I found my way around the zipper with fly (great tutorial here) and managed to put together a decent looking and wearable jeans. Having stretch in there makes the jeans also comfortable to wear. And easier to adapt, me thinks…

Sewing pattern review
Comfortable, easy to sew and true to size. If you want your jeans really skinny, this is a good pattern! Also I love that the patterns come printed on sturdy paper and just have be cut instead of copied!

Week in Review 27/2017

What did I see?
In the light of recent decisions of a certain Northern American political figure, I can only agree that Fabrice Monteiro's "Gods of Garbage" are already living with us. Her creations are photgraphed in the most polluted areas of Africa and are disturbingly disgusting. Take a look:

What did I listen to?
Nothing specific, just general radio

What did I ask myself?
What does this mean? How should I react?

What did I read?
I'm done with Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger and have finished Curtsies & Conspiracies. Next up is Waistcoats & Weaponry, which so far has been proven to be very interesting. Fans as weapons, conspiracies against the queen, vampires and telecommnication... Seriously, this book has it all!

What did I work on?
Nothing. It is just too warm in my flat! (32°C in the evening...)

I was happy about...
Being in a hotel with air condition right now. I'm on a conference for work.

I was annoyed about...
Working on the weekend. Yay?!

I bought...
Nothing besides food.

MMM 13/2017 - Belladone Dress

You probably remember the Belladone dress I made beginning of this month? Some people asked me for pcitures of it worn. Here you go!

So in etwa!

 photo IMG_1087_zpsjogdwf74.jpg

 photo IMG_1090_zps6a20pd7g.jpg

It wears like charm even in the blistering heat as it is completely unlined. The "window" in the back also lets some air in. Hopefully I can find more summery inspiration at the Me Made Mittwoch and the other amazing ladies (and maybe gents?) who sew such amazing creations!

Leo Clover pants

I don’t know about you, but most seamstresses I know have a final boss of sewing. Many people are afraid of sleeve (so called sleevils to undermine their evilness), some would rather sew 100 skirts that a corset. I belong to a group whose final boss is pants. Somehow boring, right? Now hear me out: Pants require a lot more fitting than skirts. Everyone’s crotch is different, so a pattern looking good on you might fit horribly on the next person. Crotch length, crotch curve, inseam length, pocket placement… So much to think about!

Man muss an so vieles denken!

But I wear pants a lot, especially in autumn and winter. I ride my bike and I don’t want to flash my goods to the world. And, most importantly, I want to overcome my fear. I have sewn pants that fit in the past. It’s just a mental barrier. And I know I can do this! Enter the pattern Clover by Collette Patterns. I’ve seen many a good pair of pants made from this pattern (for example by Tanit-Isis, Gertie, Fröbelina, and Mad for Mod), so I thought: Why not start there? I got some leo stretchy cotton satin from deep down in the stash and – after sighing and hemming and hawing for a good while – just got to work. The pants fit reasonably well in the beginning, but got really wide within the first hour of wear.

I moved the back zipper into the sides because that is much easier accessible. I did none of the fancy stitching that jeans for example have because this was a pure trial version. Some kind of wearable musselin? But with the intention of being worn outside. And waht about the strange pocket position? These made me feel a little like a kangaroo?

Sewing pattern review
I am a bit underwhelmed to be honest. Some of the problems come from my fabric - the bagging just needs to be taken in. But the pocket placement? And the weird lenght? Those need work for the next (wearabel) musselin!

Week in Review 26/2017

What did I see?
I can hardly imagine that I never stumbled upon Audrey Benjaminsen before, as I think I have seen her portrait of Edgar Allan Poe already years ago! But her style of drawing is great and I love all the little details and structures she creates on a flat meduim like paper! You can shop her art here, if you want to have some at home (like me, I just need to discuss with my boyfriend whch one).

What did I listen to?
Aurelio Voltaire - Cantina. Hox could you not love dirty songs about StarWars? :)

What did I ask myself?
More sewing, yay! But isn't it too warm for sewing?

What did I read?
More from Gail Carriger, this time Etiquette and Espionage, a new series which is timed before the parasol protectorate. Sophronia is a kind of tomboy and anxious when her mum sends her to a finishing school for upper class girls. She's relieved when she finds not only finds out that the school is teaching the art of spionage and killing your husband, but also finds freinds there. So far, so good!

What did I work on?
A top and a jacket.

I was happy about...
My coworker sewing with me! And my fluffy kittens, which purr and love to be pet even in the heat.

I was annoyed about...
It's warm. So warm. And will get even warmer.

I bought...
Cat food. Sh*t's expensive, yo!

Stripey Heather close up

Same dress, different day... I had some pictures taken of the SewOverIt Heather dress I wore last Wednesday and I still want to show them to you. I think on my dressform the stripe matching errors are much more prominent than on me. The back is pretty obvious, I'd say:

Week in Review 25/2017

What did I see?
More surreal paintings, but these are computer enhanced. Hüseyin Sahin is a Turkish artist who uses pictures of real landscapes plus some kind of computer magic and turns them into dreamlike creations. I love how real and unreal they look at the same time!

What did I listen to?
Just my sport's music list

What did I ask myself?
How come that watching races is so boring? Or is it just me?

What did I read?
I finished Lemony Snicket's "Series of unfortunate Events". The ending was at the same time very surprising and very sad. I really love the books and would recommend them to everyone above the age of 12 years. Next on the list is "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. There is a new TV series and the series (or rather the costumes from book and series) have raised awareness in US politics. Women wear them to protest rights (like abortion or Health Care) taken away from them. You go, girls!

What did I work on?
Pants. Pants, pants, pants. Maybe confrontation therapy works?

I was happy about...
Looking forward to a meeting with my sewing circle (or coven?) today!

I was annoyed about...

I bought...
Sewing patterns, for pants and swimsuits and a surprise...
